In this adventure, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must recover their stolen banana hoard after the mysterious Tiki Tak Tribe hypnotizes the island’s animals and causes chaos across Donkey Kong Island. Players travel through a wide variety of themed environments including jungles, beaches, caves, factories, and volcanic regions while platforming through increasingly difficult levels.

The game stays faithful to its original design, focusing on precise platforming, timing-based challenges, and collectible hunting. Players can roll, jump, swing from vines, ride minecarts, blast through rocket barrel sections, and even ride animals like Rambi the Rhino. The Switch version also includes the extra levels previously introduced in the Nintendo 3DS release, making it the most complete version of the game.

It also supports both solo play and local co-op, where a second player controls Diddy Kong, assisting with jetpack jumps and combat support. A modernized assist mode is included to help new players, alongside the original challenging “Classic Mode.”
