The series follows Captain Olimar, a small space traveler who crash-lands on a strange planet. To survive and repair his spaceship, he relies on plant-like creatures called Pikmin. These creatures can be commanded in groups to fight enemies, carry objects, and solve environmental puzzles.

Each Pikmin type has unique traits—such as fire resistance, strength, flight, or electricity immunity—forcing players to use strategy when exploring and battling. Gameplay is a mix of real-time command, resource management, and puzzle-solving.

In the first game, players must collect ship parts within a time limit. In the second, the focus shifts to treasure hunting with more relaxed exploration and expanded gameplay systems.
